We want European political leaders to do everything possible to end child poverty...but what does this mean?
The EU should take action by:
- Setting clear targets to reduce child poverty,
- Producing an annual scoreboard on child well-being,
- Improving data collection and reporting on children,
- Showing what works and helping member states improve their policy and practice through mutual learning and exchange,
- Working together across all policy areas that influence child well-being.
To achieve such strong political commitment we are calling for the European Commission to adopt a Recommendation on Child Poverty and Well-being.
And, we believe decision-makers should prioritise the following policy approaches which, in our view, work best in tackling child poverty:
- Empowering children through participation
Why? Because every child has the right to be heard - Universal access to services
Why? Because every child should be able to access the services they need - Equal opportunities for all
Why? Because every child should have the same chance in life - Supporting vulnerable children
Why? Because some children need extra help to be included - Prevention and early intervention
Why? Because prevention is better than cure - Strengthening families
Why? Because families support and nurture children - More accountability
Why? Because Governments must be held to account for children - Sufficient resource allocation
Why? Because money invested in children is money well spent - Multidimensional policies
Why? Because children do not grow up in silos
